Ask Sophie
Pet Skunk Legality
Dear Sophie,
I have a problem with getting papers for my skunk. I didn't buy the skunk from a USDA licensor. The skunk was abandoned. The previous owners didn't want the responsiblities any longer.
I applied for a license for the skunk and the problem was they want information on the skunk's USDA licensor. How do I go about getting that information so they do not kill my best friend. Please help me if possible.

This question really cannot be answered without knowing what state you are from. For Florida residents, the rule states:
68A-6.0023. General Regulations Governing Possession of Captive Wildlife.
(6) No person shall possess any wildlife requiring a permit for personal use, or any wildlife for sale or exhibition, without documentation of the source and supplier of such wildlife.
The person currently in possession of the skunk had better be able to at least state where they got the animal from; even a hand written receipt is enough to meet the requirement. The only exception I can think of is when an anonymous drop off at the Care Center occurs and even then, the records of the Care Center would have to reflect the drop off.
For those in a similar situation, please fill out the Contact Us Form and we will attempt to get a state specific answer for you. We urge anyone planning to get a skunk as a pet to apply for a permit first so the animal is not at risk.
Sophie would like to thank Lynnda Butler, President of Skunks as Pets, Florida and Rick Brown, FWC, for their help in answering this question.
Dear Sophie,
Where can I find a website that tells me if it's legal or not to have a domestic
skunk as a pet. Or if a special license is required? I live in Missouri.

Go to Aspen Skunk Rabies Research for a list of legal states. Sophie believes at this time, skunks are illegal in Missouri. For more information contact the wildlife authorities for your state.
Please support Aspen Skunk Rabies Research, Inc. so we can obtain a vaccine for domestic skunks and change the laws so that skunks can be legal in every state.
Dear Sophie,
Are skunks legal in California? I have read the whole basic care guide and I think I would love to have a skunk as a new family member!

Sophie says,
I'm sorry but skunks are not legal in California at this time. Please contact your state's wildlife department for more information.
