Ask Sophie
Pet Skunks International
Dear Sophie,
I live in Canada and an looking for a respectable skunk breeder.
I'm new to the game and am also looking for any advice I can get on raising a
pet skunk from infancy to adulthood. I'm going to be leaving for school soon and
am debating about whether to get a skunk now (I'll be travelling back an forth
weekly) or wait until I am finished school. (Approx 1 year) I also live in a
small apartment but get outside frequently during the day, so exercise is not a
problem, but I am worried about skunk-proofing my small abode. Thanks in
advance! Natalie
Sophie says,
Skunks need to bond with their owners and many will bond with only one person in a family. Sophie thinks it would be best for your skunk if you waited until you have finished school and could spend more time with it. Plus this would give you a chance to learn more about their basic care. First, you will need to contact the wildlife department in your province and verify that it is legal for you to have a skunk as a pet. You should read everything you can find on the subject of diet. Different groups recommend different diets. Skunks are omnivores and eat a wide variety of foods.
Ruby Fur Farms is the largest breeder of skunks in the US. They are in New Sharon, Iowa and they ship all over the world. Baby skunks are only available in the spring of each year. Now is a good time to educate yourself and prepare your home.
Dear Sophie,
Hallo, I am from Czech republic (Europe) and I very much want to buy a skunk. Can you help
me, please?

Sophie says,
Sophie came from Ruby Fur Farms in Iowa. They sell and ship skunks around the world. Please make sure it is legal to import a skunk into your country before purchasing. Skunks require regular and expensive veterinarian care. You need to have a knowledgable vet lined up first.
